This highly attractive and prolifically blooming plant can enhance many North American gardens from late spring through fall. The large, bright, composite flowers attract a host of native bee species throughout an exceptionally long blooming period. Bright green sweat bees, leafcutter bees and long-horned bees are frequent visitors to this colorful, easy to grow native wildflower.

Several species are routinely available and can be grown in most parts of the U.S. and Canada. Once established, Gaillardia are quite drought-tolerant and enjoy a long bloom period from late spring through early autumn.

Recommended Species

Gaillardia aristata (blanketflower) is native to western, midwestern and some parts of the eastern U.S. and most of Canada.

 

Gaillardia pulchella (Indian blanket)  is native to most of the U.S. and Canada, except the extreme northwest states and provinces.

 

Numerous cultivars of both of these species can be found in North American nurseries.
